The VU Education Lab AI Assistant is a browser extension that turns the text of the page you are on into teaching material. You click the extension icon, pick a tool, and copy the result into Canvas, your slides or a document.

Advantages

  • Summarize gives a concise summary with learning objectives and discussion questions
  • Quiz produces multiple-choice, true/false or short-answer questions, with explanations
  • Explain pitches a difficult topic at beginner, intermediate or advanced level
  • Teaching offers ideas for a lecture, a discussion, an activity, an assessment or an essay
  • Custom for anything outside that, with templates to choose from
  • Works on most sites — news articles, Wikipedia, academic journals — and in Dutch and English

Points to note

  • A VU CTL pilot, for VU staff only
  • Chrome, Brave and Edge only; Firefox is not supported
  • Sign in with your VU Google account (@vu.nl); a personal Gmail will not do
  • Page text goes to the server to be processed and is discarded immediately afterwards; nothing is stored
  • Runs on Azure OpenAI under the VU’s Microsoft agreement: processing inside the EU, and your data does not train models
  • After a spell of disuse the server has to wake up; try again half a minute later
  • The source code is open on GitHub
