Foreword to Version 1.1
1 min read
Generative AI is becoming increasingly intertwined with study, work, and everyday life. This book was developed to support students and instructors in using this technology thoughtfully and critically, with attention to technical aspects, social impact, and ethical questions.
The first version was published on September 15, 2025. We received many responses from instructors, students, and experts within and beyond the VU. Many readers appreciated that there is now a shared document that can serve as a foundation for education about AI. At the same time, we also received critical feedback that helped us improve the book.
For example, readers wondered whether the book represents an official position of the VU or whether students can claim rights based on it (especially because version 1.0 of this book had ‘handbook’ in the title). That is not the case: the book is a tool for learning and debate. Readers also pointed to the importance of clear disclaimers and transparency about authorship and expertise. In addition, instructors shared concerns about how students can continue learning effectively while using AI for assignments and theses. This is a complex issue that deserves ongoing attention.
Based on this feedback, we are now publishing a revised version. Passages have been clarified, and necessary disclaimers have been added to clarify the scope of this document.
The book remains a living document that evolves with rapid technological developments, experiences from educational practice, and feedback from you as a reader. We invite everyone to keep learning, reflecting, and talking about the role of AI in education and society.
